Memory of Place. History of "Arman" in the Change of Times and Biographical Chronicles
We have talked to different people for whom "Arman" is more than a cinema. Through their personal memories, we have traced the cultural layers of "Arman", a building with unusual architecture and history.
"Arman" means a "dream." The light-filled building is decorated outside with massive bas-reliefs inspired both by communist ideology and by the real dreams of that time about the future, space, progress and peace.
Perestroika (Restructuring)
In the first years of independence, many cinemas were closed, turning into furniture salons, casinos and nightclubs. How did Arman survive then and how did the aesthetics of the first oil money of the early 2000s affect the project of its reconstruction?
Large cinema has already returned to the walls of "Arman" - one of the few cinemas operating outside large malls, and today the historical appearance of the facade and interiors is returning to it. In the future, an exhibition and educational space with actual mission may be opened here.
